1. Tell us about your basic background? Where did you come from, former education, former jobs.
My name is Siyu Bian and I come from China. I received my bachelor degree in Economics and Finance from University of Iowa and master degree in Economics from University of Wisconsin-Madison. I also worked as a agricultural data scientist at McKinsey & Company.
2. What was the research you performed while at OFOR?
During my time at OFOR, my primary research area is market microstructure theory and machine learning in agricultural futures market. I use high frequency data to measure informational content in intraday volatility, and use machine learning methods to forecast efficient volatility.
3. Where are you currently working? What are your main responsibilities?
I am an assistant professor at Huazhong Agricultural University in Wuhan, China. My research projects cover a wide range of topics, such as market efficiency in agricultural commodity markets, commodity-related regulations, and forecasting.
4. How did OFOR contribute to your development as a scientist and as a person?
OFOR provides me with both financial and educational support for my Ph.D. study and enables me to pursue advanced research topics in the field of agricultural economics. Also, the mentors from OFOR help me improve my research skills and guide me through the challenges in my project with their experience and insight.
5 .What is one memory about OFOR you carried with you?
I remember my discussions with my mentors during my Ph.D. study at OFOR. The questions asked by the mentors during the discussions were tough. However, by answering these questions and solving the puzzles embedded in these questions, my research capability can always advance to the next level.
